College Soccer Team on 6 game unbeaten streak
Wow, we are having a great season. The stats show this is the best season for this team since 1995! We are currently enjoying a 6 game unbeaten run with 4 wins and 2 ties.
I have learned a tremendous amount this season so far and I am sure over the remaining 5 games of the regular season I will learn some more very valuable lessons.
Our 6 game run all began when I made two significant changes to how I was running the team.
Tactically I switched from a traditional 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1. I moved my right midfield player to the position between the forward and the midfielders and I strengthened our central midfield as well.
This produced instant results with this player scoring 2 goals and earning an assist as we won 5-4 away from home.
In the couple of days leading up to this game I made a significant decision regarding practices. I decided to devote 1 hour of each practice to shooting and finishing. Yes, I succumbed to the word “drill” as I came up with what I believed were realistic game like drills to help the players improve their finishing. The result, we scored 5 goals away from home against a team we had only scored 4 goals against in the prevous 20 games!
We have continued to devote 1 hour of each 2 hour practice to shooting and finishing and it has really paid off. We have stuck with the 4-4-1-1- formation. We change it to 3-4-1-2 if we are behind and we have come from behind in 3 occasions to win the game.
We have 5 games left over the next 10 days with the aim of making the play offs. We are in an incredibly competitive conference, we are undefeated over the last 6 games yet we are still in 5th place!
Once the season is over I will have more time to outline exactly what we cover in our practices. In the meantime, keep in touch and we hope to make you all proud!
