UEFA Champions League Final, what did I learn?

Wow, what a game. I just witnessed Barcelona giving a clinic in how to play soccer. Manchester Utd came out guns blazing and had 5 attempts on goal very early on. However as the saying goes, if you don’t take your chances you will be punished.

Out of nowhere and against the run of play, a moment of brilliance from Samuel Eto put them 1-0 up. After that goal, United were a shadow of their former selves.

Barcelona then went on to give a master class in passing and keeping possession, United where chasing shadows. When Man Utd did win the ball, they gave it immediately away. Barcelona used space so well, they seemed to make the field twice its size and made United ineffective at closing down space.

Clinical finishing from the strikers was, as usual, the difference, but what impressed me most was simpy how well Barcelona kept possession, created space and were positive when attacking. Man Utd were simply out played and outclassed.

I learned from this game how important it is to teach my team how to keep possession, how to create space, how to dictate the tempo of the game and how to play with personality and presence. It almost seemed like men against boys out there.

I can’t wait for August when FC Barcelona come here to Los Angeles, they are playing the LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl, what a night that will be!
